Artist - Frans Pourbusse the Younger 1569-1622, author of portraits and altar paintings on religious subjects. One of the leading masters of the Flemish school of the late 16th - early 17th century. The portrait depicts the military leader and statesman Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma (1545-1592), ruler of the Spanish Netherlands. The iconography dates back to the lost portrait by Frans Pourbus the Elder, in which Alexander Farnese was depicted in armor with the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
